BEFORE IT WAS A HIT XLV: War. Continues next week.

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong were one of the Motown label's key songwriting teams. Together, they created many grittier R&B tracks that led some of its acts in a musical direction that contrasted with the bouncy pop usually associated with the record company.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood War 12" Single Cover 1984.jpgEdwin Starr was one of the beneficiaries of their talent. In 1970, he reached the top in America with a potent version of the Whitfield-Strong composition "War". The single also reached #3 in the U.K.
WarSpringsteenSingleCover.jpgEarlier in that same year, The Temptations included the original version of the song on their album 'Psychedelic Shack'.
Later remakes include interpretations by Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1984 and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band 2 years later.
Each new song will be added to the spotify playlist named: ‘Before It Was A Hit Song’.  You can check out the previous earlier / original versions of the hit songs you know and love.
