CAFFE` LATTE`
TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#342 I WANT YOU BACK Jackson 5
Motown launched the stellar career of The Jackson 5 in 1969 with the single "I Want You Back". Its original title was "I Wanna Be Free". The label's writing & production team referred to as The Corporation consisted of Freddie Perren, Deke Richards, Alphonso Mizell and Motown head Berry Gordy Jr. The former 3 envisaged Gladys Knight & The Pips or Diana Ross recording it, but Gordy decided to alter their song to suit his new group. It's hard to imagine anyone else delivering the song the way the 10-year old Michael Jackson did. Despite his young age, the vocal is expressive and confident.
The Corporation produced and arranged the recording, which was the lead single from their Motown debut album 'Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5'. Perren and Mizell performed on piano. The single was issued in late 1969 and was sitting atop the Hot 100 by the end of January 1970. The song also reached #1 on the US R&B chart. In Britain, "I Want You Back" peaked at #2. With this release, Michael Jackson (and his brothers) had arrived.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2 new songs are added each day (every 12 hours)  with a mid-week bonus every Wednesday.
