TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS

#368 ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART Cilla Black
Cilla Black's first UK chart entry was "Love of the Loved" in 1963. Paul McCartney had written it. The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein presented to the group's producer George Martin a copy of Dionne Warwick's new release, "Anyone Who Had A Heart", which he had obtained while in the USA. Martin was impressed and thought it would be a good song for Shirley Bassey to cover. Epstein suggested they get Cilla Black to do a remake.
The song had been penned by the gifted songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Warwick. When Martin was asked to produce Black's cover version, he didn't alter the structure too radically, but did inject the song with more dramatic effect largely due to the new arrangement from Johnny Pearson. Where Warwick's original featured a saxophone, Martin used a bassoon.
In the USA, the original version, released late 1963, reached #8. In the UK, Black's remake proved triumphant in early 1964; reigning over the Top 40 there for 3 weeks. Warwick's version struggled to a peak of #42. Her version also made 31 in Ireland.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2 new songs are added each day (every 12 hours)  with a mid-week bonus every Wednesday.
