ESSENTIAL SONGS BY
Audiences around the world were first in awe of Michael Jackson’s talent in 1969 when the wunderkind was still only 11 years of age and singing lead on “I Want You Back”. Soon, his solo career would eclipse the Jackson 5’s success. The brothers would quit the Motown label in 1975 and became The Jacksons. Michael remained a member, but his solo output went into overdrive with the albums ‘Off The Wall’, ‘Bad’ and the record-breaking ‘Thriller’. This period forever cemented his place among pop music’s greatest influences. Here are the 100 most essential recordings- solo and with his siblings- in terms of influence, popularity and quality. The tracks span the years 1969-2014.
EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD
MICHAEL JACKSON & DIANA ROSS
The R&B re-imagining of 'The Wizard Of Oz' was entitled 'The Wiz'. Motown adapted the musical into a film starring Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael as the Scarecrow. "Ease On Down The Road" was the key song from the motion picture. Motown's 2 major stars released their version as a duet in 1978.
Hal Davis produced and co-wrote "Dancing Machine", the title track on The Jacksons' 1974 album. The funky disco song returned the boys to the US Pop Top 10, peaking at #2. The disc rose to #1 on the R&B chart.
2014 saw the release of a 2nd posthumous album featuring new material by Michael. 'Xscape' included the track "Loving You" which was built around a song idea that came to Michael during the early sessions for the 'Bad' album.
I JUST CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU
MICHAEL JACKSON & SEIDAH GARRETT
Whitney Houston was originally slated to record "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as a duet with Michael. Schedules clashed and so Seidah Garrett replaced her on the track which was included on the 1987 'Bad' album. In America, the disc topped the Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The duet also reached #1 in Britain. It was a global smash around the planet.
YOU ROCK MY WORLD
Michael co-produced "You Rock My World" with Rodney Jerkins for his 2001 album 'Invincible'. The single topped charts around Europe. It went Top 10 in the USA, Britain (#2), Canada and Australia.
