5 SECONDS OF SUMMER
Australian group 5SOS scored a domestic and U.K. Top 30 hit with "Girls Talk Boys" from the 'Ghostbusters' remake film soundtrack.
BRAND NEW DAY
British singer Hayley Evetts surprised many when it was announced that she was competing in the Romanian selections for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. Her entry "Brand New Day" was very reminiscent of the Electric Light Orchestra. It was penned by the lead singer of spin off group ELO Part II. Sadly, Evetts had to withdraw before the ultimate decision due to health reasons. It was just as well: Romania was later eliminated from competing due to non- payment.
"Sandcastles" is a dramatic ballad from Beyoncé lifted as a single off her album 'Lemonade'. She co-wrote and co-produced the track.
Released in late 2015, "Sax" was from Fleur East's album 'Love, Sax And Flashbacks'. The British singer broke through with the debut single. It peaked at #3 in the U.K. and went on to chart well in Europe, Argentina, Israel and Australia.
Shaggy returned to form with his reggae pop nugget "That Love". The song is an upbeat celebration of being in love.
GIRL CAN'T BE HERSELF
As 2016 drew to its end, Alicia Keys dropped her new album 'Here'. One of its tracks is "Girl Can't Be Herself". It deals with the pressures women are subjected to, from a female perspective.
Proceeds from the song "Change" went to the victims and families of the tragic Orlando nightclub shooting.
IF LOVE WAS A CRIME
When Poli Genova delivered the Bulgarian Eurovision entry in Stockholm, it was enthusiastically embraced by the crowd. Many in the audience related to the idea of a struggle for love in countries where the civil rights and freedoms taken for granted in progressive nations, are presently far from a reality. "If Love Was A Crime" finished in 4th place overall in the Grand Final - the best result ever for Bulgaria.
PARTY LIKE A RUSSIAN
"Party Like A Russian" was the lead single from Robbie Williams' 2016 album release 'The Heavy Entertainment Show'. It dented the charts in various European countries. With wit and pop hooks, this is one of the British pop star's best songs and deserved to fare better.
STEVIE WONDER featuring ARIANA GRANDE
The animated musical 'Sing' featured "Faith", a song performed by the legendary Stevie Wonder with contemporary pop artist Ariana Grande.
