I WISH IT WOULD RAIN
“…Raindrops will hide my teardrops,
And no one will ever know that I’m cryin'...”
By 1968, The Temptations had Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield at the helm as writer / producers. The Motown group's 1968 R&B #1 smash "I Wish It Would Rain" was penned by Strong & Whitfield with co-writer Robert Penzabene. The latter inspired the theme. His wife had cheated on him and he committed suicide before the track was a chart hit. The tragic circumstances add gravitas to the lyrics. After the success of the original version, the song was covered by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin.
