Gilbert O'Sullivan's hit song "Alone Again (Naturally)" possesses one of the saddest tales. His lyrics recount a series of tragedies: rejection at the wedding altar; the death of his father followed by his mother. Rather than drown the song in saccharine, O'Sullivan keeps the words at a minimum and void of excess. Enough people were moved by its verses to make it a #1 single in America and Canada in 1972.
