John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980 in New York City. He had been a close friend of Elton's, particularly during the former Beatle's 70s 'Lost Weekend' binge drinking period. The piano player is godfather to Lennon's 2nd son Sean. Taupin's lyrics convey the loss Elton felt following the tragedy.

The ballad "Sacrifice" was written by the team of Elton and Taupin. It reached #1 in Europe and became the former's first chart topping single in Britain. Parent album 'Sleeping With The Past' was inspired by a variety of soul acts from the 1960s and 1970s.

The release of the 'Elton John' album launched the fledgling musician's profile. "Take Me To The Pilot" was on the flip side of the American pressing of the single "Your Song". The playful track was penned by Elton and Taupin.

LITTLE JEANNIE

"Little Jeannie" was a #1 hit in Canada. In the US, it peaked at #3 Pop and #1 Adult Contemporary. The sweet love song was written by Elton with Gary Osborne. The former co-produced the '21 At 33' album with Clive Franks.

Album: Tumbleweed Connection
Bernie Taupin's fascination with Americana was explored on the 'Tumbleweed Connection' album. It spawned the glorious Country & Western-tinged track "Country Comfort". The LP was unleashed barely 6 months after 'Elton John'.

"Wrap Her Up" features guest vocalist George Michael as he and Elton run through some of the most alluring women in history and contemporary pop culture. The stellar name-check includes: Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Joan Collins, Katherine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Priscilla Presley, Grace Jones, Natasha Kinski, Princess Caroline (of Monaco) and Annie Lennox. The tribute was written by Elton and Taupin. Kiki Dee performed backing vocals on the cut.

The tragic hate crime that claimed the life of 21 year old gay youth Matthew Shepard inspired the writing of "American Triangle". Taupin and Elton combined forces to construct a powerful tribute which features Rufus Wainwright on harmony vocals.

Elton dropped this wedding day anthem in 1983. It was the 3rd single lifted off the mega-successful 'Too Low For Zero' album. The composition, written by him and Taupin, reached the UK Top 20.
