LUTHER VANDROSS

New Yorker Luther Vandross was born in 1951. Before his solo career was in full swing, the influential vocalist had guested on key tracks in the catalogue of other acts, including David Bowie and Chic. He sang on recordings by Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Roberta Flack and arranged the background vocals on the Donna Summer & Barbra Streisand duet "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)". 

After tasting initial success in the studio band Change with "Searchin'" and "The Glow Of Love", Vandross signed with Epic Records in 1981. 'Never Too Much' proved an effective debut LP. It topped the US R&B Albums Chart, as did his next 6 releases. 

Vandross recorded duets with Dionne Warwick ("How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye"), Janet Jackson, Bell Biv Devoe & Ralph Tresvant ("The Best Things In Life Are Free"), Mariah Carey ("Endless Love") and Beyoncé ("The Closer I Get To You").

Whitney Houston recorded his composition "Who Do You Love". Vandross also produced Aretha Franklin. In 2002, Vandross wrote "Dance With My Father" with Richard Marx. It won the Song of the Year Grammy Award. Around this time, Vandross suffered a serious stroke. The singer never fully recovered, dying in 2005.
