VILLAGE PEOPLE
The Village People is a vocal group created by Jacques Morali in 1977. The producer recruited members to represent characters that would attract a gay following. His Greenwich Village characters included gay stereotypes such as a leatherman, a cop, a construction worker, a G.I., an Indian and a cowboy.
A self-titled debut LP was unleashed in 1977 which featured 1st hit "San Francisco". The single fared especially well in Australia and Sweden. Follow-up album 'Macho Man' did even better, spawning a hit in the title track. In 1978, the disc peaked at #3 in Australia and cracked the US Top 30.
Later that same year, the group released its signature track "Y.M.C.A.". In the US, the single peaked at #2. It topped the charts in Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Decades later, revellers still fill dance floors adopting the familiar choreography that spells out the song title.
The hits continued in 1979 with "Go West" and "In The Navy". Next, the Village People starred in the film 'Can't Stop The Music'. Its soundtrack was issued in 1980. The title song reached #1 in Australia.
A change in image to reflect a shift in musical tastes from disco to new wave, saw the members don a New Romantic look. This heralded the release of 1981's 'Renaissance' album. In time, the group reverted back to its original characters and costumes.
Creator Morali died of A.I.D.S. in 1991. Leather Man/ biker Glenn Hughes died of cancer in 2001. Original lead singer Victor Willis rejoined the Village People in 2017. Randy Jones, Felipe Rose and Alex Briley remain the other founding members. This year, the group is touring the world celebrating its 40th anniversary.
