RIPERTON
R&B vocalist Minnie Riperton was born in 1947 in Chicago. She paved the way for vocalists such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray and Toni Braxton. Before her death at the age of 31, Riperton recorded 6 solo albums.
Her musical career commenced in 1961 in a girl group named The Gems on the legendary Chess label. She also contributed backup vocals on recordings by Etta James and Fontella Bass. After releasing a solo single as Andrea Davis, Riperton joined The Rotary Connection as the group's lead singer in 1968. She cut "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun" with the act.
In 1970, she issued her solo album. 'Come To My Garden' was an impressive debut LP but it did not attract sales. When The Rotary Connection split in 1971, she put her solo pursuits on hiatus and worked with Stevie Wonder.
The Motown singer co-produced 'Perfect Angel', Riperton's 1974 album. It contained the gorgeous love song "Lovin' You" which topped the US chart in 1975. The disc also peaked at #2 in Britain and went Top 5 in Canada and Australia.
In the mid-70s, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She died in 1979. The posthumous album 'Love Lives Forever' was issued in 1980. The young singer's career was cut short. Her recordings remain a beautiful legacy.
