EURYTHMICS
English duo Eurythmics consisted of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. The 2 had previously been members of The Tourists. At this time, they were a couple. When their relationship ended in 1980, so did the group. Although no longer romantically involved, Lennox and Stewart opted to continue working together as a duo.
Debut album 'In The Garden' emerged in 1981. It was well received by critics, but failed to attract significant sales. Everything changed 2 years later, with follow-up album 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Its title track and "Love Is A Stranger" reached the British Top 10 and the former made #1 in America.
Eurythmics embraced music videos as an effective tool to attract attention to its music. 'Touch' reached #1 in late 1983. More hits followed, including "Who's That Girl?", "Right By Your Side" and "Here Comes The Rain Again".
Next, the duo recorded a soundtrack for the new film version of George Orwell's classic novel '1984', which starred Richard Burton and John Hurt. It spawned the Top 10 hit "Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four)".
In 1985, "Would I Lie To You" topped the Australian chart. Follow-up single "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" reached #1 in Britain. The track featured Stevie Wonder. Aretha Franklin shared lead vocals with Lennox on the hit "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves".
Further success followed with the singles "When Tomorrow Comes", "Thorn In My Side" and "Missionary Man". As the 1980s neared its end, the hits were drying up, although 'We Too Are One' made #1 in the UK in 1989. A compilation album also reached the top in many countries. The duo took a break in 1990. Both members continued pursuing solo projects.
Eurythmics were back 9 years later with 'Peace'. It featured the singles "I Saved The World Today" and "17 Again". In 2005, "I've Got A Life" became the duo's final (to date) chart entry.
