#640 WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS? Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield
The members of dance music duo The Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe) co-wrote this song with Alle Willis in 1984. "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" was initially planned as a duet. It was later suggested that British blue eyed soul legend Dusty Springfield ought to sing it with the duo. The soloist needed persuading, but she finally accepted their invitation. Stephen Hague produced the recording which was included on the duo's 'Actually' album.
Released as a single in 1987, the collaboration returned Springfield to the public's attention and attracted new fans. In the USA, the duet became her biggest chart hit by peaking at #2. It reached the same position in Britain. On the Irish chart, the disc climbed to #1.
Springfield and The Pet Shop Boys reunited for her 1990 album 'Reputation'. They wrote and produced her hit singles "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private" which charted well in 1989 in the UK and in other countries.
#639 GOT TO BE REAL Cheryl Lynn
LA- born Cheryl Lynn (Smith) first gained fame on TV's "The Gong Show" before establishing herself as a talented vocalist and songwriter. She co-wrote her biggest hit, the disco / funk song "Got to be Real" with David Foster and David Paich, which was issued in 1978. The latter is a member of Toto. Around this time, the group was recording its debut LP and Lynn can be heard singing back -up on 1 track: "Georgy Porgy".
"Got to..." was included on her self-titled debut album. It reached #1 on the R&B chart in America and 12 Pop. It was to be her sole Top 40 appearance. Only 3 others reached the Billboard Hot 100. Despite her talent as a singer, she is now remembered as a one-hit wonder. It is a shame that later releases such as "Star Love" and "Shake it up Tonight" remain relatively unknown.
#638 SO COLD THE NIGHT The Communards
The Communards' self-titled debut album featured a variety of styles, showcasing the vocal prowess of lead singer Jimmy Somerville. "So Cold the Night" was written by him with fellow-Communards member Richard Coles. Mike Thorne produced. The track mixes Eastern influences on top of a dance beat with Somerville's falsetto rising above. It was released as a single in 1986 and reached the Top 10 in the UK and parts of Europe.
