GRAMMY WTF?

RECORD OF THE YEAR 2002

WINNER:

NOMINATED BETTER CHOICE:

As great as U2 are, “Walk On” is not one of their most defining or essential recordings. Arguably, many would find it difficult to remember how the track goes. Despite being a quality song, the following two were surely worthier alternatives:

“Fallin’” was an early indication of the scope of talent within Alicia Keys. The song remains one of her most powerful vocal deliveries. It was a US #1, reached #3 in Britain and was a Top 10 hit in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. At least the song received 3 Grammy Awards on the same night.

Similarly, Outkast scored an international smash single with “Ms. Jackson”. The disc topped the charts in America and Europe as well as going Top 3 in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. It remains an innovative hip hop recording.

FATS DOMINO

Of all the acts that injected rock ‘n’ roll with thrilling rhythm and blues, few were as adept at it as Fats Domino. In the process, he helped shape the emerging new genre’s sound. Among his hits were: “Blueberry Hill”, “Ain’t That A Shame” and “I’m Walkin’”, all brimming with the excitement of New Orleans R&B music. Despite his immense success and influence, Fats Domino never received a Grammy for any of his recordings.
