WOMAN IN LOVE Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand expressed interest in working with The Bee Gees. Barry Gibb had heard that she was difficult to work with, but decided to write some songs for Streisand’s next project. The original plan was for a few songs, but the results were so good, that Barry would helm the entire album.

At the time, public taste had discarded disco. After the mammoth success of ‘Saturday Night Fever’, The Bee Gees had become synonymous with the genre. As a consequence, the trio experienced the same backlash as disco. The brothers’ new music struggled for airplay so, the Gibbs would instead concentrate on writing and producing music for other artists. The first significant successful project would be Streisand’s ‘Guilty’ album, issued in 1980. It used the same production team behind The Bee Gees’ previous LP, ‘Spirits Having Flown’: Barry, Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson.

“Woman In Love” was written by Barry and Robin. The former performed acoustic guitar on the track. This was selected as the first single to be lifted off ‘Guilty’. The song was soon atop charts in America, Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia and South Africa. Billboard Magazine also listed the disc at #1 on its Easy Listening Chart.

The Bee Gees may have been considered out of favour, but ‘Guilty’ became Streisand’s best-selling album ever. In 2005, she reunited with Barry for a sequel project entitled ‘Guilty Pleasures’ (aka ‘Guilty Too’). The chemistry resulted in a Top 5 album on the US Chart.
