NIGHT FEVER Bee Gees

By 1978, no songwriter could compare to Barry Gibb’s chart domination. He had co/ written many chart singles for others and also created some of the biggest hit songs for The Bee Gees. When “Night Fever” moved into the top position on Billboard’s  Hot 100 in March 1978, the Gibb men were responsible for 4 of the Top 5 singles: “Stayin’ Alive” (a former #1) was at #2; Samantha Sang was at #3 with “Emotion” (written by the trio) and Andy Gibb was at #5 with the recent chart-topping song “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water” which the singer penned with Barry. Only The Beatles had enjoyed such a stranglehold on the US chart’s highest positions.

“Night Fever” captured The Bee Gees at the height of the trio’s success. This was the group’s fifth US #1 single in 4 years and the third in-a-row lifted off the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ motion picture soundtrack. Billboard would declare “Night Fever” the top single of 1978.

Robert Stigwood’s original plan was to name the film starring John Travolta ‘Saturday Night’. The Bee Gees wrote “Night Fever” and tried to persuade him to use the song title as the name of the movie. Stigwood decided to compromise and settled on a combination of both: ‘Saturday Night Fever’.

The planet succumbed to “Night Fever”, sending the single to #1 in Britain, Brazil and Canada and Top 10 in Australia, Europe, Japan and New Zealand. It is worth noting that before the arrival of the film and its soundtrack LP, disco was starting to lose its momentum. ‘Saturday Night Fever’ injected disco with renewed energy and a sharp rise in sales. Little wonder then, that The Bee Gees became so synonymous with the genre. This close association helped the trio during the 1970s but would prove to be a curse in the subsequent decade.
