WRITTEN BY THE

BEE GEES

The Bee Gees was a trio consisting of 3 siblings: older brother Barry (born in Manchester in 1946), and twins Maurice and Robin Gibb (born Isle Of Man in 1949). The brothers first performed in Manchester in 1955. Three years later, the Gibb family emigrated to Brisbane, Australia. Today, the group is regarded one of the most successful music acts of all-time.

YOU SHOULD BE DANCING Bee Gees

By 1976, disco was making its emergence felt on charts around the planet. In the US, singles such as “Rock The Boat”, “Rock Your Baby”, “Lady Marmalade”, “Boogie Fever” and “That’s The Way (I Like It)” had already reached the top. The Bee Gees began the 1970s in a bit of a slump. Working with a new producer Arif Mardin took the trio in a new musical direction. Adopting a funkier sound and with Barry's newly discovered falsetto, The Bee Gees’ fortunes were revived with the ‘Main Course’ album in 1975.

Keen to continue the momentum, the trio planned to work again with Mardin. He was no longer available due to record label constraints. An attempt to recruit producer Richard Perry did not work out.

The Gibb brothers were keen to recreate the conditions that had proved to be so fruitful during the ‘Main Course’ sessions.  Back in Miami, Florida at Criteria Studios, the trio was re-united with two key individuals on the previous project: Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson. These two co-produced ‘Children Of The World’ with Barry, Robin and Maurice.

“You Should Be Dancing” was the new album's first single.  As “Jive Talkin’” had previously done, this disc flew up to the summit of the US Hot 100.  The song, written by the three brothers, also reached the Top 10 in Britain, Canada (#1), Europe, Australia (#2) and New Zealand.
