Kanye West was born in 1977 and is one of the leading figures in rap/ hip hop today. While he has sparked controversy over the years, there is no denying his impact on rap.
He began as a beatmaker, gradually moving into production during the late 1990s. By the new millennium, his stature had grown significantly. A turning point was West's production role on Jay-Z's album 'The Blueprint', most notably on the hit "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)".
A near fatal car accident inspired his debut single "Through The Wire", issued in 2003. This became the lead single for his first album 'The College Dropout' which was unleashed the next year. "Slow Jamz", from the album, reached #1 on the US Pop, Rap and R&B charts. The single also peaked at #3 in Britain. West was rewarded with key Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album and Song (for "Jesus Walks").
Even greater success followed the release of 'Late Registration' which featured the hits "Touch The Sky", "Diamonds Are From Sierra Leone" and the global smash "Gold Digger".
Next, West founded his own record label (GOOD Music). In 2007, 'Graduation' became his 2nd #1 album. It featured the #1 single "Stronger". '808s & Heartbreak' followed in 2008 and also made #1. Its tracks included "Heartless"and "Love Lockdown".
All of West's subsequent albums thus far have reached #1, including his collaborative project with Jay-Z 'Watch The Throne' in 2011. He joined Paul McCartney and Rihanna on the international hit "FourFiveSeconds" in 2015.
These days, West dominates social media with his wife Kim Kardashian. He has mooted running for President in 2020. In the meantime, any new music from West is enthusiastically greeted by an ever growing audience.
