QUINCY JONES
Producer. Songwriter. Recording artist. Arranger. Author. Bandleader. Musician. Quincy Jones is all of these things and even more. Born in Chicago in 1933, Q has worked with many of the greats, including: Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. This entry will mostly focus on his record catalogue.
Jones demonstrated musical ability at a young age, progressing to the role of arranger for the likes of Count Basie, Dinah Washington and Tommy Dorsey. Next, Jones became a member of Lionel Hampton's orchestra. In 1956, Q released his debut album, 'This Is How I Feel About Jazz'. By 1961, he had become Vice President of Mercury Records. His 1st #1 hit as producer was 1963's "It's My Party" for Lesley Gore. He scored films and TV shows, including the groundbreaking "Roots".
In 1981, Jones enjoyed his greatest solo success with 'The Dude'. The album featured guest artists such as Jackson, Patti Austin and James Ingram. It included the hit ballads "Just Once" and "One Hundred Ways".
He assembled another impressive group of performers for 1989's 'Back On The Block' album. Among the guests were Sarah Vaughan, Barry White, Chaka Khan and Tevin Campbell.
By now, Q's profile had expanded due to his role as producer of Jackson's 'Thriller' and the USA For Africa charity recording "We Are The World".
'Q's Jook Joint' was released in 1995. The Grammy winning album boasted a line-up that included: Stevie Wonder, Bono, Phil Collins, Gloria Estefan and R. Kelly.
Another all-star project was unleashed in 2010. 'Q Soul Bossa Nostra' featured Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Jennifer Hudson, Amy Winehouse and John Legend. In 2013, Jones was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
