COLD AS CHRISTMAS
(IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR)
“…The temperature’s up to 95,
but there’s a winter look
in your mother’s eyes.
And to melt the tears,
there’s a heat wave here.
Tell me how come it’s
as cold as Christmas
in the middle of the year?....
Elton John's "Cold As Christmas (In The Middle Of The Year)" is a track on the piano player's 'Too Low For Zero' album. The LP was issued in 1983. John composed the music to accompany Bernie Taupin's lyrics.
The song's protagonists are in the Caribbean. Their relationship is strained. There is hope that this tropical setting will help rekindle their relationship. Despite his efforts, the male narrator realizes that there has been no thawing between them.
The climate is used to highlight the distance between the couple. Despite the heat, there is still a cold detachment present. Their relationship appears to be beyond salvaging.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
