#118
R. KELLY
Chicago's Robert Kelly was born in 1967. He became one of the leading figures in 1990s R&B as a performer, producer and songwriter.
With his band Public Announcement, Kelly released debut album 'Born Into The 90s' in 1992. Together, they scored 2 US R&B Chart #1 singles with "Honey Love" and "Slow Dance (Hey Mr DJ)" that year. '12 Play' followed in 1993. It contained "Bump n' Grind", which topped the R&B and Pop charts.
Next, Kelly produced Aaliyah's debut album 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number'. Controversy followed when it emerged that the 2 had wed. Aaliyah was underage at the time. The marriage was shortlived. Kelly penned the American & British #1 hit "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson.
In 1995, his 'R. Kelly' album topped the US Pop Albums Chart. The disc included 3 R&B #1s: "You Remind Me Of Something", "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)" and "I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)".
He raised his profile in 1996 with the mighty ballad "I Believe I Can Fly" from the film 'Space Jam'. As well as topping the US R&B chart, the song became his 1st #1 in Britain.
Kelly recorded a duet with Celine Dion. 1998's "I'm Your Angel" gave him another R&B #1 single. "If I Could Turn Back Time" peaked at #2 in the UK in 1999.
'TP-2.com' gave Kelly another #1. The 2000 album featured 2 more R&B chart topping singles: "I Wish" and "Fiesta (Remix)". Another scandal erupted, involving a sex tape depicting Kelly and a minor engaging in sexual activity.
Kelly re-emerged in 2003 with a new #1 hit: "Ignition (Remix)". The lead single from his 'Chocolate Factory' album was followed by another R&B #1: "Step In The Name Of Love (remix)".
The albums 'Love Letter' (2010) and 'Write Me Back' (2012) saw Kelly adopt an old skool smooth R&B style. He returned to his sexual themes for 2013's 'Black Panties' and 'The Buffet' in 2015. The following year, Kelly issued a Christmas album.
