In the male dominated rock music industry, Carole King has established herself a place among the greats for 2 distinct reasons. As half of the Goffin & King team, she composed several hit songs for a variety of artists that includes The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, The Chiffons, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Bobby Vee, The Monkees, Little Eva, James Taylor, The Shirelles, The Carpenters, Kylie Minogue and Herman's Hermits. Later, as a recording artist, King broke sales records for her 1971 album. The LP helped launch the singer/ songwriter era.
Born Carole Klein in 1942, the New Yorker began displaying musical talent at an early age. Her aspirations saw her mixing with other emerging songwriters such as Neil Sedaka and Paul Simon. She inspired the former's hit "Oh Carol". Around this time she met Gerry Goffin. The 2 formed a songwriting partnership and eventually married. By now, she was working under the name Carole King.
The couple began creating hits at the famous Brill Building. In 1961, The Shirelles took their song "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" to #1 in America. That same year, Bobby Vee topped the US & British charts with "Take Good Care Of My Baby". In 1962, Little Eva reached #1 in America and #2 in the UK with "The Loco-Motion".
Around this time, King cracked the Top 40 with the solo hit "It Might As Well Rain Until September". Before the 1960s ended, she and Goffin had divorced. King married musician Charles Larkey. Together, they formed The City. The trio only issued 1 album. Colleague James Taylor persuaded King to focus on a solo career. Her debut LP 'Writer' stiffed,  but follow-up 'Tapestry' was a watershed recording.
The legendary album reached #1 in America and sold millions. It spawned the US #1 single "It's Too Late". Later that year, 'Music' returned King to the top. In 1974, 'Wrap Around Joy' repeated the feat. Her 1976 album 'Thoroughbred' featured 4 new songs penned by Goffin & King.
Her 3rd marriage ended when her husband Rick Evers died of a drug overdose in 1978. King moved to a small village in Idaho. She continues touring and recording to this day.
In 2014, "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical", based on her life and music, opened on Broadway. Her songs have been covered by the likes of The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack, Billy Joel, Donny Hathaway and Grand Funk Railroad.
