THE KILLING OF GEORGIE
(PARTS I & II)
“…Never wait or hesitate,
get in kid,
before it’s too late,
You may never get another chance.
'Cos youth’s a mask,
but it don’t last...
The violent death of a gay friend inspired Rod Stewart to write the song "The Killing Of Georgie". It was included on the rock singer's 1976 album 'A Night On The Town'.
Georgie's tragic story begins with the gay youth coming out to his parents. They disown him. He relocates to New York City where he gains acceptance from Broadway's gay clique. On his way home, he is confronted by a gang. Georgie is stabbed to death.
Stewart obviously had lofty ambitions when he penned the moving song. The influence of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan in his storytelling is evident. Stewart is at his best here.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
