#94
ALL GONE AWAY
“…Come take a walk upon these hills,
& see how monetarism kills-
Whole communities-
even families-
there’s nothing left so-
they’ve all gone away...
Paul Weller had already established himself as one of rock music's leading social commentators while leading The Jam. He continued in this role as a member of The Style Council and as a solo artist.
"All Gone Away", a track on the former duo's 1985 album 'Our Favourite Shop', is a stinging song aimed at what was happening at the time the disc was released.
The track describes a deserted town, where stores have closed down and the population has moved on to eke out a living elsewhere. A later verse attacks the greed that drives companies offshore in order to maximise profits.
Weller is brutal with his lyrics here. He cleverly wraps his sting in a disarming and deceptively cheerful rhythm. The despair of communities such as the one in the song is driven home effectively.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
