WHERE IS IT WRITTEN?
“…Why have the wings,
unless you’re meant to fly?
And tell me please,
why have a mind,
if not to question why?
And tell me where-
where is it written,
what it is I’m meant to be...
"Where Is It Written?" is the opening song from the film version of 'Yentl'. Barbra Streisand is a young woman with a thirst for knowledge, eager to immerse herself into the world of scholars. The character she portrays (Yentl) is barred from education because of her gender.
Michel Legrand scored the film. Married couple Alan & Marilyn Bergman contributed the lyrics to the soundtrack's songs. "Where Is It Written?" finds Yentl questioning her community's conventions. Why are women denied access to learning? Why do females have brains if they should not be educated? These questions form the seed of a decision she arrives at following the death of her father. Yentl will disguise herself as a male and study at a yeshiva.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
