ABBATHE 40 MOST IMPORTANT SONGS

4 MAMMA MIA

Writers: Benny Andersson / Bjorn Ulvaeus / Stig Anderson

ABBA's "Mamma Mia" was the last song cut for the group's self-titled album and initially not intended for single release. The group's previous 3 tracks lifted off 'ABBA' had failed to re-ignite the band's post-Eurovision fortunes. It was the over the top reaction to "Mamma Mia" when played on the Australian pop music TV series "Countdown" that eventually led to its release in 1975.
Defying the pessimistic expectations, the single reigned over the Australian chart for 10 weeks. ABBA achieved 3 consecutive #1s, each overthrowing the other. Only The Beatles had done so before. Renewed faith in ABBA meant that "Mamma Mia" managed to chart globally; reaching #1 in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany. It has gained more prominence through the musical that shares its name with the hit song.
