100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

💥65 Rapper’s Delight

The Sugarhill Gang

Sugarhill Gang.jpgJust as punk was a new expression for rock fans, a new urban attitude was emerging on the street. The Sugarhill Gang did not invent rap. Nor did the group create the first hip hop recording. What “Rapper’s Delight” did achieve was crossover to the mainstream. Some labelled the single ‘disco’, peaking at #14 on Billboard’s Disco Chart. The disc also reached #4 Soul and #36 Pop. The crossover track became the first rap hit. Its appeal spread beyond America. “Rapper’s Delight” cracked the charts in Britain (#3), Canada (#1), Europe, New Zealand and Australia. The trio from Harlem was named after its label: Sugar Hill Records. Label boss Sylvia Robinson tapped into the new trend on the streets. She recruited Big Bank Hank, Master Gee and Wonder Mike. Each member raps on the song. The track is built around Chic’s “Good Times”. Initially, that group’s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were uncredited. Permission to sample the track had not been requested. This was later rectified. Rap had arrived. It would be some time before it was ubiquitous as it is today, but it all started here.
