100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1979

💥64 Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

Michael Jackson

A smiling adult African American male with a black afro, wearing a black tuxedo, white shirt, and a black bow tie. Both of his thumbs are hooked into his pants pockets with his palms and fingers facing forward and splayed out. The sides of his jacket are tucked behind his hands as he leans back slightly, giving a playful, casual touch to his formal look. Behind him, there is a brown brick wall and to the side of his head, there is a blue, square sign with "Michael Jackson" in white writing on two black borders, "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" in black writing, and "Can't Help It" in white writing.Michael Jackson wowed the public from an early age, guiding the Jackson 5 through a series of #1 singles: “I Want You Back”, “The Love You Save”, “A.B.C.” and “I’ll Be There”. Feeling restricted at Motown, the siblings decided to switch labels to CBS. Greater freedom saw the brothers flex their creative muscle. In 1979, Michael stepped up in a way he hadn’t before. Although he had enjoyed solo success during the decade, Michael was now poised for his place among the legends. He had met Quincy Jones while filming “The Wiz”. Q suggested he produce the singer’s next album ‘Off The Wall’. This was a brilliant match. Together, they created a showcase for the mature Michael Jackson as he entered the next phase in his career. He became the coolest African-American on the planet and the music reflected this. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” was the lead single for the album. Disco was going out of favour, but the track fused elements of that genre with funk, pop and soul in a new and confident approach. The recording featured the “ooohs” and hiccups that would soon become his trademark. His afro and stylish dance moves were at the forefront of his innovative music video. With the promo clip, Jackson was positioning himself at the front with a medium that would become an essential marketing tool in the next decade. MTV would soon influence the charts. Jackson would exploit the use of music videos, making his new releases such as “Bad”, “Thriller” and “Black Or White” into global events. Even more significantly, with “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” Jackson laid the foundation for the phenomenal success of follow-up album ‘Thriller’. With Q as producer, this LP became the planet’s best- seller, thanks to hits such as “Billie Jean”, “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”.Jackson's domination started with this 1979 single.
