100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1975

💥53 Love To Love You Baby

Donna Summer

Love To Love You Baby.jpgTwo new musical genres began sprouting in the mid-1970s, both presaged by recordings in the preceding years: disco and punk. The arrival of the former was evident in the commercial and chart success of singles such as “Never Can Say Goodbye”, “Rock The Boat” and “King Fu Fighting” by Gloria Gaynor, Hues Corporation and Carl Douglas respectively. The emerging new genre drew from the sounds of Motown, funk, Philly Soul and the works of Barry White and Isaac Hayes. Donna Summer broke through in 1975 with the sultry “Love To Love You Baby”. This was the first hit 12” disc, perfect for DJs searching for a never-ending dance track in discotheques. Summer had her African-American vocal skill which found its match when coupled with Euro-disco. The song was the first of the major hits created by Summer with producer Giorgio Moroder in Europe. The latter’s team included talents such as Pete Bellotte, who produced the track. Summer was a rare disco diva in that she was heavily involved in the songwriting process. Moroder wrapped her song ideas around his innovative synth magic. On this particular track, Summer injected a heavy dose of sex and seduction, simulating the sound of an orgasm. While numerous disco tracks could be labelled vacuous, this could not be said about the creativity evident in the innovative work from Summer and Moroder. Among the most popular are the hits “Bad Girls”, “Hot Stuff”, “MacArthur Park”, “On The Radio” and “Heaven Knows”.
