100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Kraftwerk

A74-D-front-250.jpgIn the Sixties and early 1970s, a diverse group of musicians began incorporating the Moog synthesizer into their music. These acts included The Beatles, The Monkees, Stevie Wonder and Giorgio Moroder. In 1970, a group formed in Dusseldorf, Germany. Kraftwerk (German for ‘power station’) emerged as other groups, such as Can and Tangerine Dream, were sprouting in the country’s music scene. In 1974, the ‘Autobahn’ album was unleashed. That LP featured a 22+ minute version of the song. Sounds of the ignition, horns, passing traffic were fused with the new possibilities offered by the synthesizer. Kraftwerk sounded machine-made. The cold and robotic soundscape somehow managed to make the mundane (like, for exanple, a road trip) sound thrilling. In 1975, the lengthy album track was trimmed down to a more radio-friendly 3-minute edit. Issued as a single, the disc – one of the most unlikely Top 40 hits- charted in Britain, North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Kraftwerk opened music to new sounds. Synth-pop owes a huge debt to the group who continued inspiring other musicians with tracks like “The Model” and “Computer Love”. Among the acts influenced by Kraftwerk are: David Bowie, Eurythmics, New Order, Depeche Mode, Devo and Ultravox.
