100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1977

💥60 Heroes

David Bowie

The album cover features a black and white photograph of Bowie's face with his hands held upAs an artist, David Bowie was a chameleon, adopting new images such as Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke. His recordings reflected the different personas he occupied. Among the many standouts were: “Space Oddity”, “Starman”, “Golden Years” and “Fame”. In the mid-1970s, Bowie relocated to Berlin. At the time, the city was divided between the East and West. Brian Eno had just been overwhelmed by Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. He and Bowie were working on the latter’s next album project. The Hansa recording studio was located close to the Berlin Wall. Despite the bleak and fortified atmosphere, Bowie and Eno created a modern love song. Bowie was inspired when he spotted his producer Tony Visconti kissing his secret girlfriend by the Wall. Their relationship was a secret because Visconti was married. The various session players recorded their parts separately. Visconti then spliced the best parts together. The last key component was Robert Fripp. His guitar part gave the song its special quality. Bowie’s lyrics and vocal added emotion to Eno’s cold and stark synth track. “Heroes” and its parent album of the same name gave the globe another reason to marvel at the artist’s talents. He would follow it with more treats, including “Ashes To Ashes”, “Fashion”, “Under Pressure” (with Queen) and “Absolute Beginners”.
