100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1973

💥48 Time

Pink Floyd

A prism refracting white light into a rainbow on a black backgroundBefore unleashing ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, Pink Floyd had been honing its skills in the studio. Even when their songs concerned themselves with ordinary everyday themes, the British group grew gradually more adept at adding dimensions to the music it created. In 1973, Pink Floyd released its magnum opus. ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ found the band at the height of its power. With an album of highlights such as “Money”, “Us And Them” and “Time”, Pink Floyd augmented the aural experience with sonic treats. The latter begins with countless clocks chiming and alarms going off. Engineer Alan Parsons recorded each clock separately in an antique store. After the jolt in the intro, Nick Mason comes in with his rototoms. Remaining members- Roger Waters on bass, Richard Wright on keyboards and David Gilmour on guitar- then join in. The latter two share lead vocals on different portions of the track which runs for almost 6 minutes. All of these studio effects emphasize the song’s theme: that time appears to pass quicker as one ages. Pink Floyd widened the soundscape with the parent album. The band was rewarded with one of the lengthiest chart runs in rock music history, stretching out from 1973 to 1988.
