đź’Ą57 Anarchy In The U.K.

The Sex Pistols

Anarchy in the UK 7″ (1976) - Sex Pistols | The Official WebsiteThe arrival of The Sex Pistols was as subtle as an atomic bomb. Punk and New Wave had started to flex its creative muscle. Here was a group that not only defied convention, but trashed all that came before it. Debut single “Anarchy In The U.K.” was a definite line in the sand. The venom in Johnny Rotten’s lyrics and lead vocal staked the band’s place in music history. What followed was not only controversy, but a radical shift. EMI unleashed the disc and sales were rising when the label decided to surrender to public outrage. The disc was pulled. EMI dropped the group. The Pistols signed with A&M. This lasted around a week. Virgin Records signed the band next. Around this time, the album ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ came out. Follow-up single “God Save The Queen” attracted more publicity and sales. Its release was timely, as Elizabeth II was celebrating her Silver Jubilee. The single reached #1 (although some UK charts refused to acknowledge this). Notoriety and infamy only served to attract more fans to the new attitude. The Pistols invited anyone to form a group, regardless of any vocal or musical ability. Music has never been the same since.
