100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1976

💥56 Blitzkrieg Bop

The Ramones

Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop cover.jpgThe Ramones drew inspiration from acts such as The Stooges and MC5 to create what became the blueprint for punk rock groups. “Blitzkrieg Bop” was the opening track on the group from Queens, New York’s debut album. The self-titled LP introduced the planet to a revolutionary approach to music. With the brief track, The Ramones managed to ensnare new fans. Despite sounding radically different, “Blitzkrieg Bop” is filled with hooks, most notably its chant. It may shock readers to learn that the group got the idea for that unforgettable “hey ho, let’s go!” cry from “Saturday Night” by The Bay City Rollers. That song features the chant “S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y”. Tommy Ramone, the main architect of the song, wanted a similar feature for the track. The Ramones may not have become pop sensations in the same league as the tartan-clad Scottish boy band, but the group had an immense influence on punk rock and new wave. This can be recognized in acts such as Beastie Boys, The Pixies, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Green Day.
