100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1980

💥67 Love Will Tear Us Apart

Joy Division

12" coverIn 1975, American married couple The Captain And Tennille scored a worldwide smash with the upbeat “Love Will Keep Us Together”. Joy Division’s post-punk response to that pop song was the gloomy “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. The circumstances of what was going on at the time of its creation have often overshadowed the song’s place in the evolution of music. Its lyrics were inspired by lead singer Ian Curtis’ break-up with his wife Deborah Woodruff. The single was issued one month after Curtis committed suicide. Tragedy only added to the downbeat mood of the track. Its title is inscribed on his gravestone. Joy Division’s hit single took punk rock down a new path, one that would help usher in the alternative / indie sounds of the 1980s and 1990s. Following Curtis’ death, the group quit. The band reinvented itself as New Order, dropping punk for dance music.
