100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1980

💥68 Back In Black

AC/DC

ACDC Back in Black Single Cover.jpgWhen groups lose a luminary frontman, the void can often be the deathknell of that act. Bands like The Doors, Nirvana and INXS failed to successfully replace lead singers Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Michael Hutchence respectively. Australian band AC/DC was fronted by Bon Scott. As the group’s profile expanded, the stories of his lifestyle became legendary and helped establish the act’s image. On February 19, 1980, aged only 33, Scott died. Devastated, the surviving members contemplated terminating the group. One month later, the members, now determined to continue, recruited a new lead vocalist: Brian Johnson. In April, AC/DC recorded a new album. ‘Back In Black’ was a tribute to Scott but it served to reinvigorate the new line-up. Defying the odds, the parent LP amassed sales that exceeded those for its previous albums. It spawned 2 hit singles: “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution”. The title track serves as a bridge between Scott’s legacy and the future. “Back In Black” influenced the sound of heavy metal and hard rock that would be a fixture on the charts in the 1980s and the decade that followed. The song and the album paved the way for Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Poison and Skid Row.
