100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1975

💥55 Gloria

Patti Smith

The album cover features a black-and-white photograph of Patti Smith slinging a jacket over her shoulder.Punk Rock’s roots go back to the garage bands and groups such as The Stooges and MC5. Other stepping stones included The Velvet Underground and The New York Dolls. This was against the backdrop of corporate rock. Stadiums were packed by affluent 'celebrity' rockers. Recording and production techniques had reached a level of perfection that had been hitherto implausible. While acts such as Steely Dan, Toto and Eagles were elevated, an undercurrent of a new breed of performers was brewing. In this context, Patti Smith emerged. Her debut album ‘Horses’ arrived in November 1975. Its opening track was a medley of “in Excelsis Deo” and a cover of Van Morrison’s composition (originally recorded with the group Them) “Gloria”. Right from the start, Smith established that she would not be restrained by convention. The track begins with her now infamous intro: “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine”. The remainder of the song has a woman going where no previous female rocker had dared to go. There’s an intense power and sexual energy in her delivery. Smith inspired other musicians: both male and female. Her fusion of poetry and rock music built on what Bob Dylan had achieved in the previous decade. She is remembered as “The Godmother Of Punk”.
