#940-936 20 -a -day special fast track...
#940 SURVIVOR Destiny's Child
All the inner turmoil and drama going on at the time within Destiny's Child proved to be the perfect inspiration for the girl group's next hit. Line-up re-shuffles and tension made the members feel like contestants on the reality TV show "Survivor"; hence the song's title. Lead singer Beyonce' Knowles wrote the track with contributions from her father Mathew Knowles and Anthony Dent. The song was issued in 2001 and became the title song from the group's next album that year.
#939 SHADOW DANCING Andy Gibb
By the time "Shadow Dancing" was released as a single in 1978, Andy Gibb had already enjoyed 2 previous #1 singles in the US. His brothers, the Bee Gees, were commanding the charts with their disco sound. Co-written by all 4 Gibb brothers, the song became Andy's final American chart topper and the title track for his next album. The protagonist in this dance-flavoured mid-tempo song finds himself besotted by a woman he can't have.
Sadly, his cocaine addiction affected his health to the point that the successful soloist was dead 10 years later, aged just 30.
#938 BABY CAN I HOLD YOU? Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman's eponymously titled debut album from 1988 was packed with strong compositions dealing with serious issues. In a way, "Baby Can I Hold You" was a refreshing shift within its track listing. A tender but insightful and intimate song written by the soloist herself.
#937 RHINESTONE COWBOY Glen Campbell
Glen Campbell cut a diverse set of country crossover songs during the 1970s. He recorded a cover of a hit originally released the year before by its writer Larry Weiss. Campbell heard it played on the radio and purchased the artist's album to listen to while on tour in Australia. Upon his return, his record company's Vice-President, Al Coury, had a song he wanted to suggest for the musician: "Rhinestone Cowboy". It was the same song that Campbell had noticed. The remake proved a wise decision; becoming another US#1 for the vocalist and his signature song.
#936 THE ONE I LOVE R.E.M.
College radio darlings R.E.M. finally cracked the mainstream with this 1987 single. All of the group's members are credited as composers of this track; a dark song about repeatedly using people. It helped make the accompanying LP 'Document' a success and launched one of the best alternative groups of the time.
