#900 (YOUR LOVE KEEPS LIFTING ME) HIGHER AND HIGHER Jackie Wilson
Brunswick Records was a key label in the evolution of R&B/ Soul. Their roster included essential artists such as Gene Chandler, LaVern Baker, Tyrone Davis, Major Lance, Erma Franklin, The Chi-Lites and the very influential Jackie Wilson. The latter was born in Detroit in 1934. He had recorded some significant tracks for the label commencing in 1957. After a string of Top 20 singles, Wilson was in need of a major hit by the mid-Sixties. Carl Davis, a renowned but underrated Chicago Soul producer, was brought in to produce a track written by Gary Jackson, Raynard Miner and Carl Smith. The song was "Higher and Higher", which soon became a soul music staple. Recorded in mid-1967, it returned Wilson to the Top 10 in the US and #1 R&B that year.
