#960 GLAD I'M NOT A KENNEDY Shona Laing
Shona Laing is one of New Zealand's most talented musical exports. Born in 1955, she began performing at an early age. In time, she had scored a string of hits in her homeland before deciding to move to London in the mid-Seventies. It was 10 years before Laing had migrated back. Releasing a new album, entitled 'Genre', it some time for the track "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" to be noticed. American college radio picked up the song once it was included on her 'South' LP. Laing wrote the song and it was remixed in 1987 by Peter Wilson. Along with its ingenious lyrics, the track includes fragments of speeches made by JFK, just 1 of the members of the famous American family that endured many tragedies.


#959 THIS MASQUERADE George Benson
Leon Russell penned the moving ballad "This Masquerade" for inclusion on his 1972 album release 'Carney'. Later that year, it was covered by Helen Reddy. The following year saw a new remake, this time by The Carpenters. In 1976, George Benson interpreted the song with a cruisy and jazz-leaning approach for his very successful 'Breezin'" LP. The singer performs lead guitar on the track. Tommy LiPuma produced the cut. The remake won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

#958 LIVE TOGETHER Lisa Stansfield
Following the success of her solo breakthrough song "All Around the World", Lisa Stansfield's "Live Together" was the next track lifted as a single off her 'Affection' album. The LP was issued in 1989. The single made the Top 10 in the UK the following year. It was written by the same team that had comprised her previous group The Blue Zone: Stansfield with Ian Devaney and Andy Morris. In 1998, the former 2 were married.

#957 HELP YOURSELF Tom Jones
Tom Jones was born in Wales in 1940. He has enjoyed decades of enduring popularity and can still refresh his image with some cutting edge tracks, his cover of Prince's "Kiss" being perhaps the best example. In 1968 Jones scored another hit with the title track from his 'Help Yourself' album. The song was first created for the Italian San Remo Song Contest. Carlo Dinida composed the music. The original Italian lyrics were replaced by Jack Fishman, who co-wrote songs for the likes of Petula Clark, Herman's Hermits and Engelbert Humperdinck.The result was a British & Australian #1 hit for Jones.

ELO's sound continually evolved while still remaining true to the original concept of the group. On "Sweet Talkin' Woman", the band was subtly incorporating  elements of disco. At this time, 1977, that genre was dominating radio airwaves and ELO were determined to remain current. Penned by lead singer Jeff Lynne, the track was included on the group's successful 'Out of the Blue' LP.
