New age/ electronic act Enigma emerged from Germany in 1990 with the worldwide hit "Sadeness". The single immediately attracted attention, standing out from the rest of the new releases at the time with its unique fusion of ambient music with Gregorian chants. Often also entitled "Sadness", the track is credited to Curly M.C., F. Gregorian and David Fairstein. Production was handled by the group, under the leadership of Michael Cretu. The sensual French lyrics emphasize the song's reference to the Marquis de Sade.
