#935 A LOVE STORY Marcia Hines
Boston's loss became Australia's gain when Marcia Hines journeyed here to take part in the musical production of "Hair". She was young and actually thought she was heading to Austria, but soon after her arrival, discovered she was pregnant. Australia became her home. Over the decades, she has enjoyed enduring popularity and is still considered one of our most cherished female singers. "A Love Story" was written and produced by Robie Porter who worked closely with Hines in the early phase of her recording career. The beautiful lush ballad was included on her second Australian LP, 'Shining', released in 1976.
#934 LOOKING FOR CLUES Robert Palmer
Robert Palmer's solo output from the late 70s to the mid-80s was always interesting. He astutely avoided being boxed into one genre, recording songs that were vastly different from each other. Born in 1949, the English musician first came to attention as a member of the group Vinegar Joe. When that band split in 1974, he was signed as a soloist by Island Records.
"Looking for Clues" was from his 1980 LP 'Clues'. Palmer wrote the song himself and midway through, there is a xylophone solo.
#933 DANCE LITTLE LADY DANCE Tina Charles
British female soloist Tina Charles enjoyed a string of hits in the 70s that were in the disco style. One of her biggest was "Dance Little Lady Dance". Written by her producer Biddu with Ron Roker and Gerry Shury. Biddu had already achieved success with Carl Douglas, producing his global hit "Kung Fu Fighting". In 1976, the Indian producer/ songwriter worked on Charles' first album, which included this hit song.
#932 TAKE MY BREATH AWAY Berlin
Berlin was a new wave band tled by vocalist Terri Nunn. They formed in L.A. in 1982. They shot to prominence via a song featured on the very successful soundtrack album for the Tom Cruise film 'Top Gun'. Renowned producer Giorgio Moroder was at the helm of this project and he produced "Take My Breath Away", Berlin's track on the LP. He co-wrote the international #1 with Tom Whitlock. Together, they also penned "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins, for the soundtrack.
#931 A LITTLE MORE LOVE Olivia Newton-John
Despite being one of the most famous Aussies on the planet, Olivia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England in 1948. She did, however, spend the bulk of her childhood in the Australian city of Melbourne. Newton-John actively pursued a singing career from an early age, culminating in a talent contest win where the prize was a trip to the UK. She won. Once in Britain, the singer worked as a member of a duo and a group until her big break came working with Cliff Richard.
Years later, Newton-John was a star, in time becoming a household name in England, Australia and in the US. "A Little More Love" was a hit in 1979 for her, peaking at #3 in America, where she was based at the time. The single was penned & produced by a fellow Aussie expat, John Farrar and was the biggest hit on her 'Totally Hot' LP in the same year.
