#1013 SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST Vanessa Williams
She may have first come to the world's attention as a disgraced beauty queen, but Vanessa Williams reinvented herself and become one of the best R&B singers of the 1990s. She made history in 1983, becoming the first African-American victor in the Miss America pageant. A year later, Williams relinquished her title when nude photos she had posed for were released by Penthouse magazine.
Williams had a voice as stunning as her good looks, so decided to focus on a singing career. 1988 saw her release a debut album and hits that included "The Right Stuff" and "Running Back To You". She reached the top on the US R&B chart with the latter and "Dreamin'"; establishing her credentials in that genre. In 1992, she released her new single: a ballad penned by songwriters Phil Galdston, Wendy Waldman & Jon Lind. "Save the Best for Last" reached #1 in her homeland, Canada & Australia.
