#965 EARLY IN THE MORNING Vanity Fare
British group Vanity Fare formed in 1966 and released the hit song "Early in the Morning" in late 1969. The song was written by Mike Leander, Booker T. Laury and Eddie Seago. The catchy song peaked at #12 in the US & #8 in their homeland. The group is still active today.

#964 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER Paul Simon
One of Paul Simon's most memorable solo recordings is "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover". The backing vocals heard on the cut are by Patti Austin, Phoebe Snow and Valerie Simpson. In late 1975, the single became the singer/ songwriter's first American #1 following his split with musical partner Art Garfunkel. The track is also found on Simon's 'Still Crazy After All These Years' album. Simon wrote the song and co-produced it with Phil Ramone.

#963 SAY I LOVE YOU Renee Geyer
Renee Geyer is the premier blue-eyed soul vocalist in Australia, much respected even outside the country. "Say I Love You" is different from most of the songs in her repertoire, but remains her biggest hit song. It's a cover of an Eddy Grant track on his 1979 'Walking on Sunshine' album. The reggae artist penned the  song himself. Geyer's remake was included on her 'So Lucky' album, issued in 1981.

#962 UNDER THE BOARDWALK The Drifters
Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick wrote "Under the Boardwalk" for The Drifters. They planned to have member Rudy Lewis sing lead on the cut, but he tragically overdosed on heroine on the eve of the session. Johnny Moore was given lead vocal duties at that session in Lewis' place. He executes the task magnificently. The Drifters' songs around this time featured exquisite production and effects. The harmonies and strings help to mark this song as one of the key R&B tracks of the time. When released as a single on the Atlantic label in 1964, "Under the Boardwalk"  peaked at #4 in the USA.

#961 LONGFELLOW SERENADE Neil Diamond
In 1974, Neil Diamond released "Longfellow Serenade". The single, written by the singer/songwriter, climbed to #5 in America. Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He worked first as a songwriter before branching out as a solo artist before the end of the 1960s. This song was lifted off his 'Serenade' LP.
