#892 ALONE AGAIN (NATURALLY) Gilbert O' Sullivan
Arguably one of the most maudlin, if not saddest, hit songs ever is Gilbert O'Sullivan's tale of woe, "Alone Again (Naturally)". We first find the protagonist contemplating suicide after being jilted at the altar. As the song progresses, the verses cover the death of his father, followed by his mother. Despite (or perhaps because of) its depressing subject matter, the song proved a major hit. It reached #3 in the UK and enjoyed 6 weeks atop the US chart in 1972. O'Sullivan penned the ballad. Gordon Mills produced it.
