#990 MORNIN' Al Jarreau
Al Jarreau brought jazz to the masses in the 80s with his crossover success. "Mornin'" was a song he co-wrote with writer/producers David Foster &and Jay Graydon. The latter 2 met at a Maxine Weldon gig and have collaborated countless times since.  
Released in 1983, "Mornin'" peaked at #21 on the American Pop chart. It was the opening track on Jarreau's eponymous album.

#989 Y.M.C.A. Village People
The definitive audience participation song, with its trademark hand movements, Y.M.C.A".  has evolved into more than just the camp anthem it started out as. Originally created as a tribute to the humble neighbourhood YMCA, its true meaning was lost (and arguably still is!) as far as mainstream audiences were concerned. Written by singer Victor Willis with producers Jacques Morali & Henri Belolo, the single came out (pun intended!) in 1978. It was a massive hit, reaching #1 in Australia. Over the year's its appeal has not diminished and the track is a party dancefloor staple to this day.

#988 BABOOSHKA Kate Bush
Few artists could have pulled off a track like "Babooshka". That it was a major hit single was even more improbable, but Kate Bush had already set herself apart from most female soloists by the time of this song's release. Bush's composition finds its protagonist doubting her spouse's fidelity. She devises a plan to test him. 
In 1980, "Babooshka" was lifted as a single off her 'Never for Ever' LP. Accompanied by an equally intriguing video clip, the track peaked at #5 in Britain and climbed to #2 in Australia.

#987 NIGHTS ON BROADWAY Bee Gees
The song "Nights on Broadway" offers a clear preview of where The Bee Gees were heading next musically. We hear Barry Gibb stretching out his falsetto. The music now strongly features funky attitude and synthesizer. All 3 members of the trio helped pen the song which was on their 1975 LP 'Main Course'. From this album on, the Gibbs' sound was heading towards disco and the hit songs that preceded the mega-selling 'Saturday Night Fever' were to follow. 

#986 SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER The Motels
The Motels enjoyed a string of hits during the Eighties, starting with "Total Control" in late 1979. "Suddenly Last Summer" was written by lead singer Martha Davis. The track was included on their 'Little Robbers' album, issued in 1983. Released as a single, it reached the Top 10 in the US.
