#1000 FLASH'S THEME Queen
Director Dino de Laurentis asked rock group Queen to create the soundtrack for his film version of the comic book hero 'Flash Gordon'. The band agreed. "Flash's Theme" is also known simply as "Flash". The song was written by guitarist Brian May. While the movie flopped; the single, released late 1980, charted around the world. At the time, Queen were at their commercial peak, having just scored 2 global #1s: "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust".
In the hands of lesser acts, "Flash" would have failed dismally, but Queen - and especially lead singer Freddie Mercury- deliver. Dialogue and sound effects from the film are interspersed throughout the track.
#999 GIVING UP, GIVING IN The Three Degrees
The Three Degrees formed in 1963 in the American city of Philadelphia. They had a cameo in the 70s Best Picture Oscar film 'The French Connection'. "Giving Up, Giving In" was a single the trio released in 1978. It was an empowering song about a woman who decides to be assertive. The track was written by Giorgio Moroder & Pete Bellotte, who were regular collaborators at the time with Donna Summer. The single was included on their 'New Dimensions' LP, issued in 1978.
#998 WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS Irma Thomas
Irma Thomas, born Irma Lee, is known as 'The Soul Queen of New Orleans'. In 1964, she recorded a Randy Newman song entitled "While the City Sleeps". The single flopped, but is an example of lost gems from that era. The protagonist is in a relationship but has fallen for a paramour. She wants to come clean, but knows that her confession will break her partner's heart. It's a familiar theme, but Thomas packs a lot into the song's 2.30 mins.
#997 LISTEN TO WHAT THE MAN SAID Paul McCartney & Wings
The first track lifted as a single from 'Venus and Mars', Wings' 1975 album, was "Listen to What the Man Said". Paul McCartney wrote this song. It proved a good choice for lead-off track, reaching #1 in both the US & Canada. It was a Top 20 hit in many other territories.
#996 COME SAID THE BOY Mondo Rock
With lyrics conjuring up the image of summer, the beach and raging hormones, Mondo Rock scored a chart hit in 1983 with "Come Said the Boy". Written by group member Eric McCusker, the lead vocals were delivered by Ross Wilson. The latter is an Australian music veteran who still records and performs to this day. Along with his hits with Mondo Rock, Wilson is well known for "Eagle Rock", which he recorded in the 1970s with his another group - Daddy Cool.
