#970 STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU Dragon
Dragon formed in New Zealand in 1973. Built around the nucleus of brothers Marc & Todd Hunter, the band soon gained notoriety and popularity in their homeland. They relocated to Australia in order to build up their profile in the larger territory. It took 2 years of almost constant touring, but Dragon won over Australian music fans. In 1978, the group scored a #1 in Australia with "Are You Old Enough?" That hit was off their 'O Zambezi ' LP, which also contained the follow-up single "Still in Love With You". By this time, Dragon were peaking higher on the Australian charts than in their country of origin. Principal songwriter and keyboardist for the group, Paul Hewson, penned this song. Drugs increasingly impeded lead singer Marc's ability to continue in the band. He was dismissed in 1979. The group continued in a downward slide, culminating in the decision to split.
Their fortunes changed with the decision to re-unite (with Marc back out front) in 1982. The group enjoyed a new string of hits in the 80s, but turmoil within led to Hewson's departure in 1985. Tragically, only hours later, the talented composer died of a heroin overdose. The Hunter brothers persevered with replacements before calling it a day in 1988. Sporadic reformations and other side projects followed until a new loss impacted on the group: Marc was diagnosed with cancer in 1997. In just 8 months, he surrendered to the disease. The group remained on hold until 2006 when Todd regrouped and continue to this day.
#969 THAT'S ALL Genesis
As the 80s rolled on, Genesis embraced new music trends and even the advent of video to become one of the decade's most successful acts. Of course, lead singer/ drummer Phil Collins' ever increasing profile as a soloist didn't hurt either.
In 1983, Genesis released a self-titled LP which contained lead single "Mama" as well as the follow-up hit, "That's All". Credited to all 3 members of the group, the song shuffles along with its tale of a no-win situation in a relationship.
#968 LOVE WILL FIND A WAY Pablo Cruise
Forming in San Francisco in 1973, Pablo Cruise combined jazz with West Coast pop, achieving a brief chart run in the 70s. "Love Will Find A Way" was penned by group members David Jenkins and Cory Lerios. It was one of the 3 singles that became hits from their 1978 LP, 'Worlds Away'. The album closes with a cover of Peter Allen's "I Go to Rio".
#967 THE SECOND YOU SLEEP (I STAY TO WATCH YOU FADE AWAY) Tess
In 2002, Danish rock group Saybia released an album entitled 'The Second You Sleep'. Lead singer Soren Huss also plays acoustic guitar in the band and he provided the lyrics while the rest of Saybia contributed to the music. The album was recorded in neighbouring country Sweden. The title track was covered by Swedish singer Tess Mattisson 2 years later. Her version was a complete dance makeover that reached #12 in her country. Tess - as she usually is billed- had previously been in the duo La Cream.
#966 THREE CIGARETTES IN AN ASHTRAY K.D. Lang
In 1987 when K.D. Lang released 'Angel with a Lariat', she was still primarily a country singer. The LP featured her cover of the Patsy Cline song "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray". The song was written by Eddie Miller & W.S. Stevenson. The latter is remembered for his unscrupulous practices (although common at that time), including giving himself co-writing credit on songs he owned or had altered.
That Lang could so ably tackle a song previously cut by a country legend is a testament of her skill and range. Her vocal work here conveys heartache as she tells us of how another woman took her partner. Dave Edmunds produced the LP.
