#975 UNFINISHED SYMPATHY [Paul Oakenfold Mix] Massive Attack
Sometimes known simply as Massive, the UK group Massive Attack formed in 1987. The trio co-wrote "Unfinished Sympathy" with Jonathan Sharp and Shara Nelson. The latter was enlisted to deliver lead vocals on the soaring dance track. Released in 1991, the single version featured a remix by electronica guru Paul Oakenfold which remains one of the most uplifting and simply aurally beautiful recordings within this genre. The original version can be found on 'Blue Lines'. Nelson launched her solo success after the popularity of this song.

#974 EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC The Police
In 1981, The Police were 2 years away from becoming the hottest group in music. Their 'Ghost in the Machine' found the group expanding their sound and on this hook-laden pop gem, they introduce new instruments and musical effects. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" is an irresistible slice of radio-friendly Police. The song is punchy with their trademark reggae undercurrent, but this track packs in much more. And Sting's lyrics introduce us to a protagonist that is unlucky in matters of the heart. The single reached #1 in many countries, including the UK. In America, it became The Police's highest charter until they claimed the top prize 2 years later.

#973 LIGHTNIN' STRIKES Lou Christie
Lou Christie finds himself in a dilemma on "Lightnin' Strikes", his US #1 pop hit from 1966. He wants to settle down with his partner, but then finds it too difficult to resist the urges when he encounters someone new. If the overall sound, especially that catchy chorus reminds you of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, it is because that group also made use of arranger Charles Calello. Christie wrote the song with Twyla Herbert.

#972 BAND OF GOLD Freda Payne
Freda Payne was born in Detroit in 1942. Having started singing at an early age, she was being wooed by both Berry Gordy at Motown and Duke Ellington. Instead, Payne pursued her jazz ambitions until 1969, when the singer signed with Invictus. That label had the former Motown songwriting / production team of Holland/ Dozier/ Holland at the helm. The trio wrote new material for her first Invictus LP. "Band of Gold" was that record's title track. The song was penned by Robbie Dunbar with Edyth Wayne. It reached #1 in the UK and #3 in the US. 
Freda's sister Scherrie Payne was a member of The Supremes, the group H/D/H had created and produced numerous hits for in the 60s. For a time, Freda was married to R&B vocalist Gregory Abbott, who scored a #1 in 1987 with "Shake You Down".

#971 LET'S DO IT, LET'S FALL IN LOVE Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston
It's frightening at times to think how many great songs still lie in the vaults of various record companies. Motown unearthed some breathtaking recordings when compiling a box set to commemorate Marvin Gaye. One of the previously unreleased tracks on that 'Marvin Gaye Collection' was his remake of the Cole Porter standard "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)". Recorded as a duet with Kim Weston in 1966, it was finally unearthed from the label's archives in 1990. The song was written for a 1928 musical named "Paris", Porter's first Broadway success.
