The title song from Bruce Springsteen's 1975 album has long been revered as an American rock staple and one of his signature songs.
Combining the sonic power of Phil Spector with Dylanesque storytelling, Springsteen crafted an anthem for the working class. Its lyrics ooze sweat, fear and energy. There is urgency in its verses. 
Wendy and the protagonist are at a watershed moment in their young lives. They are about to plunge into an uncertain destiny. 
Springsteen describes the 2 characters as "tramps". They are outsiders. As the song unravels, we are left wondering how this couple's relationship will fare.
